Manchester City have experienced their first trophyless season since 2016/17 and, unlike kits of the recent past, the three released last season will forever be synonymous with disappointment and underachievement.
It must be a strange feeling for City fans, so let’s take a look at some of the clubs best ever strips to cheer them up.
5 Manchester City 2022/23 Home

Goes without saying really. Featuring a centralised badge, a maroon trim and the iconic sky blue, the club lifted the infamous Treble in Istanbul in this kit.
Erling Haaland shattered English scoring records, Ilkay Gundogan scored after 18 seconds against Manchester United in the FA Cup final win and the Blues condemned Real Madrid, Champions League holders at the time, to their heaviest ever defeat in competition history.
City’s total dominance of England and Europe in this shirt might have influenced this decision, but its unique design earns it a place in our list.
4 Manchester City 2011/12 Away

Another fairly modern shirt, and perhaps overlooked due to the notoriety of the home kit from that season. Hint: Agüeroooooooooooooooo!
The iconic red and black have featured in numerous away strips in the clubs history, both before and since this specific kit. But this one tops the bill for us.
This kit just screams of Edin Džeko too, which is a bonus. What a player.
3 Manchester City 1993-95 Third

Maybe most famously worn off the football pitch, Liam Gallagher poses with his arm on brother Noel’s shoulder during the pinnacle of the Oasis glory days.
The kit features a white and navy pinstripe pattern with the iconic Brother sponsor.
If only Noel had taken inspiration from this strip when designing the recent “Definitely City” kit, which marked the 30th anniversary of Oasis’ iconic album Definitely Maybe.
2 Manchester City 1997-99 Home

Kappa just does it right. With a slightly darker shade of blue, City wore this strip in the darkest depths of the third tier, the lowest the club has ever fallen in their history.
1999 saw City win the playoffs in dramatic fashion against Gillingham, with two injury time goals taking the game to extra time, and then a penalty shootout. Nicky Weaver was the hero in spot kicks, and his iconic celebration ensued.
This top was very unfortunate to miss out on the top spot.
1 Manchester City 2018/19 Third

Don’t hate us city fans. We just love it.
Winning the title in the south coast sunshine is about as good as it gets. Doing it in this kit makes it even better.
This City squad was one of the most destructive of all time, finishing on 98 points and winning the domestic quadruple.
We can see this shirt becoming a classic in future City folklore.
