The five best Leeds United shirts of all time
By Ollie Mitchell

Leeds United are loved by millions, and certainly hated by millions, too. But no matter what you think of them, it’s hard to deny that they’re icons of the British game.

A return to the Premier League will arrive next year after two seasons in the Championship, but back in the day, the club were heavyweights of the game, with their numerous Champions League appearances bringing iconic moments, such as a “f***ing great goal” at the San Siro, Ian Harte’s free kick against Deportivo La Coruña, or the infamous final against Franz Beckenbauer and Bayern Munich.

This is absolute class. The away shirt from the season before was a shocker (as was the football) so this was a welcome addition to the Leeds United locker.

Although not necessarily used by many people, the club’s nickname of ‘The Peacocks’ is used perfectly here, creating a lovely shirt in a new colourway. Smart.

Look at that collar. Look at that badge. Enough said.

A remake is available to buy here.

The sponsor isn’t my favourite, but the shirt sales speak for themselves – a return to yellow has been the most popular thing in Beeston since Marcelo Bielsa’s bucket.

The number of these shirts you could see at every single game at Elland Road this year is something that is ridiculously notable.

2. 2001/03 third

That iconic sponsor, those iconic Champions League days, the absolute pinnacle of Leeds United shirts was this time period, arguably: all three in the club’s white, yellow and blue. However, the little details elevate it above the others from this time: specifically the gorgeous yellow on the sleeves.

Notably, it was worn in an away comeback victory against Arsenal to keep the side in the Premier League – putting the nail in the coffin of the Gunners’ title hopes in the process, courtesy of a late goal from mark Viduka.

1. 1995/96 home

There were a number of home shirts from the 90s that could have taken the crown, but this one, with the retro ‘LUFC’ badge, is so simple that it’s brilliant. No nonsense.

Speaking of… a certain Yeboah scored some absolute worldies in this shirt. Have a look.
