Quick fire football fashion questions with Peter Drury
PlayStyles (PS): What’s your favourite kit of all time?
Peter: England – 1978 World Cup
PS: Your least favourite kit of all time?
Peter: Any of the ultra-modern third strips that make no attempt to reflect the history of the great clubs that wear them!
PS: Favourite ever boots?
Peter: Proper, old-fashioned black ones – 1970’s schooldays!
PS: Most iconic footballers hairstyle?
Peter: The Kevin Keegan perm.
PS: Best dressed footballer of all time?
Peter: Bobby Moore – always immaculate.
PS: Best dressed colleague/pundit?
Peter: Daniel Sturridge.
PS: Worst dressed colleague/pundit?
Peter: Nobody is worse-dressed than me!
PS: Favourite football fashion moment?
Peter: Peter Shilton’s all-white goalkeeping kit.
PS: What’s the last football kit you bought?
Peter: Queen of the South shirt.
PS: Most iconic kit of all time? (the most known all over the world in your opinion)
Peter: Any Brazil top.
PS: Have there been any kits which have made identifying players more difficult whilst commentating?
Peter: Yes – plenty! Any shirt which makes the number illegible is the enemy of the commentator. Generally speaking, that means stripes (without a panel to accentuate the number). Most (including those mentioned) have now acknowledged the issue and resolved it. But, down the years…Sheffield Wednesday, Newcastle, West Bromwich Albion and numerous others!
PS: What was your first ever football kit?
Peter: School U8s!
PS: Is there a uniform code for commentary?
Peter: Not normally. Sometimes – if you’re “in vision” – it’s preferable to look smartish. (On NBC – USA, they like us to wear a tie). But for actually commentating, it really doesn’t matter. Shorts and t-shirt would be fine!
PS: What’s the worst kit clash you’ve ever encountered?
Peter: I can’t remember it being an issue…at least not since the 70’s when I was watching on black-and-white TV!
PS: Long sleeves or short sleeves?
Peter: Not fussy! As a (desperately poor) player, I preferred long.
PS: Do you have a match worn kit collection?
Peter: No!
PS: If there was one stadium to host the Met Gala, what would it be?
Peter: The Bernabeu.
PS: What is your favourite commentary moment?
Peter: “They think it’s all over! It is now!!’ Kenneth Wolstenholme 1966.
